Multi-year Project Will Provide County Residents Safe Access to Metroparks and Complements County’s Greenway Plan

The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works is celebrating the completion of Mastick Road in the cities of Fairview Park and North Olmsted, a stretch of 3.2 miles of road that saw over $6.2 million in improvements across five years.

Work on Mastick Road was completed in four phases, with the work in 2020 including the rehabilitation of the side-hill structure located midway between Valley Parkway and Eaton Road. During the last phase of the project a multi-use path was built parallel to the structure to connect a future planned path along Mastick Road.

This new structure will create a safer connection between the neighborhoods in Fairview Park, North Olmsted and the Metroparks, complementing the work of the County’s Greenway Plan. The Greenway Plan aims to provide a comprehensive countywide network of trails that are safe and welcoming for people of all ages and abilities. Completion of the structure is expected in the first half of 2021.

“I am excited to celebrate the completion of the Mastick Road project,” said County Executive Armond Budish. “This is huge not just for Fairview Park and North Olmsted, but also for our ongoing Greenway Plan. I am grateful for our partnership with the Metroparks, which will allow us to install a multi-use path connecting to this road so that residents will have yet another option for travel within our county and easy access to the parks. I want to thank our Department of Public Works for their hard work on this project and for residents’ patience as we worked to rehabilitate this road and bridge.”

A timeline of the work on Mastick Road is as follows:

  • 2015: The County assisted Fairview Park with an emergency project after a culvert failure caused the road to be closed. Total project cost: $500,000
  • 2016: Resurfacing of Mastick Road from Columbia Road to the North Olmsted eastern city limit. Total project cost: $500,000
  • 2019: Resurfacing of Mastick Road from the Fairview Park western city limit to Eaton Road. Total project cost: $1.1 million
  • 2020: Rehabilitation of the side-hill structure located midway between Valley Parkway and Eaton Road. Total project cost: $4.1 million

“Mastick Road was an important project for the County, and for the residents of Fairview Park and beyond,” said Director of Public Works Michael Dever. “I’m very grateful for the partnership and collaborative effort with the cities and the Cleveland Metroparks, as we worked hard to make this road safer and more accessible for residents.”

Cuyahoga County celebrates the completion of Mastick Road through a virtual ribbon cutting, which can be viewed below.
