Public Comment Needed on New Corrections Center

by Devyn Giannetti , Communications Specialist, Department of Communications

exterior view of the Justice CenterThe Cuyahoga County Justice Center Steering Committee is seeking public comment on the forthcoming corrections center site selection.

What is the Justice Center Steering Committee?
The Steering Committee is comprised of individuals from the County administration, the County and the City of Cleveland Court Systems, and the City of Cleveland representatives. The Committee has met frequently since March 2019 to:

  • Gain updates from the hired DLR Group and Project Management Consultants
  • Provide ongoing feedback
  • Make critical determinations for the future of the Justice Center

What determinations have the Steering Committee made?
In November 2020, the Steering Committee determined that it would proceed with the development of a new Corrections Center to be located outside of the Cleveland Downtown core. This new facility would replace the jail facilities currently located at the Justice Center (pictured above) and is part of a larger justice system reform effort.

Why is this needed?
The current facilities are outdated, obsolete and inefficient, both in terms of physical condition and ability to meet the programmatic needs of a properly functioning and humane justice system.

Why is public comment needed?
This project may impact those who reside and work in Cuyahoga County in a number of respects. Community understanding, input and support is necessary to ensure that the facility properly serves the community while being a good neighbor.

How can I participate?
You can watch the below video presentation and take the coordinating survey. You can also submit any additional questions and comments about the project through email or standard mail.
