Cuyahoga County Announces Staff Reductions In Auto Title Offices

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced today that 19 county employees will be laid off in a restructuring of the county’s auto title offices intended to bring costs more in line with other large counties.
The reductions are part of an ongoing, systematic examination of all offices under the county executive. From Jan. 1 through July, county government had already reduced its payroll by 224 employees, for an annual net savings of about $12.4 million. Today’s restructuring is expected to reduce payroll by about $800,000.
The restructuring of the county’s auto title offices is based, in part, on a comparison of auto title transactions in large Ohio counties. The comparison shows that, last year, auto title employees in Hamilton, Lucas and Montgomery counties processed between 6,274 and 7,795 title transactions per person. In Cuyahoga County, auto title employees processed 4,665 titles per person last year.
“We are taking a data-driven approach to our analysis of county operations,” FitzGerald said. “This is part of a continuing effort to reduce costs and streamline Cuyahoga County’s new form of government.”
The offices are responsible for issuing certificates of title for automobiles, boats, and trailers. The certificates of title represent official proof of ownership.
County government operates auto title offices at 1261 Superior Ave. in Cleveland; 5069 Great Northern Plaza in North Olmsted; 12100 Snow Road, Suite 15, in Parma; and 21100 Southgate Park Blvd., Suite 101, in Maple Heights.
Most affected county employees were to be notified today.
