CLEVELAND –Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and the Cuyahoga County Council will acknowledge U.S. Army Sgt. Daniel Burgess, who, in mid-November, was on patrol in Afghanistan when an IED detonated. Burgess suffered numerous injuries, including the loss of his lower right leg. When not serving our country, Burgess is a member of the Special Response Team at the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office.

The Council meeting is at 6:00 p.m. and is in the Council Chambers, located in the Justice Center, 1215 West 3rd Street, Cleveland, OH 44113.
He has been a Corrections Officer with the Sheriff’s Office for nine years and resides with his family in the City of Garfield Heights. Sheriff Reid spoke to Officer Burgess recently. He is in good spirits and has begun a year long rehabilitation program at an outstanding advanced care facility in San Antonio, Texas. His wife Jeanette is with him.

He is aware of the long road he has in front of him, but with the support of his wife and their two children feels very blessed and wished to thank everyone for their support, encouragement and good wishes.

Once Officer Burgess is able to return to the area, a formal recognition will be given by Cuyahoga County. However, as a sign of the support of Burgess’ sacrifice, employees of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and other County employees are wearing red, white and blue ribbons, with a star on it.

In addition, there will be several fund raising events being organized by his military brothers to help provide assistance to the Burgess family during this long recovery. A fund has been set up in his name at any KeyBank branch.
