CLEVELAND — A lot of kids think their dog is the best. Now kids in Cuyahoga County have a chance to prove it as part of a new contest designed to decide the county’s official “Top Dog” for 2012.

The Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office is offering the opportunity as part of a new essay contest for kids in grades 1-5. The challenge to kids is simple: In 50 words or less, explain why your dog – or a dog you know – is truly Cuyahoga County’s number one dog.

Entries are due to the Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office by 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 16, 2011. The overall contest winner, to be announced in December, will receive prizes including the honor of being awarded Cuyahoga County Dog License No. 1 for 2012.

“If you think your dog is truly Cuyahoga County’s top dog, then we want to hear from you,” Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald said.

The goal of the contest is to raise awareness about the fact that responsible guardians always make sure their dog has a license, as required by state law.

All dogs in Ohio three months of age or older must by licensed each year by Jan. 31 or within 30 days of assuming ownership. Dogs must display a tag showing they have a license at all times. This is particularly important when lost dogs arrive at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, because the tags make identifying owners much easier.

“Dog licenses sometimes make all the difference when it comes to helping finding a lost dog’s home,” said Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Sunny Simon of Euclid. Simon, who is an avid dog lover, will lead other members of the County Council in judging entries.

Licenses, which cost $16 for spayed or neutered dogs and $20 for others, go on sale Dec. 1. For more information about the contest or about obtaining a dog license, call the Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office at (216) 443-6938.

More information about the contest, including rules, can also be found on the Cuyahoga County Fiscal Officer’s Web site, which is fiscalofficer.cuyahogacounty.us
