Cuyahoga County – Summer is the peak season for lightning - a deadly weather phenomena. During the 2013 Lightning Safety Awareness Week, the Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management urges everyone to learn about the dangers of lightning.

When a thunderstorm is in the area, there are no safe places outside. If you hear thunder, get inside. 

Remember “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

Listed below are a few tips for staying safe when lightning threatens:

• Stay informed about local weather conditions by listening to a NOAA Weather Radio. Communicate imminent threats to those around you and get inside immediately.The safest structures are fully-enclosed buildings. Once inside, avoid contact with plumbing, do not use any device plugged into an electrical outlet, stay off corded phones, and stay away from windows and doors.
• If you can’t get to a sturdy building, an enclosed car can also provide some protection.
• If you can’t get to a building or car, stay away from trees, flagpoles, power lines and other tall objects. Continue to seek shelter.
• If your home has been struck by lightning and you see fire or smoke, evacuate immediately and call 9-1-1.
