IT Professionals Focus on Protecting Local Governments Against Cyber Crimes

CLEVELAND – The Cuyahoga County Department of Information Technology (IT) is conducting an IT Cyber Security information-sharing session on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.  The goal of the session is to discuss the ever-increasing threat of cyber crime against local governments.   The information-sharing session was announced at the 2013 Spring Information Security Summit held in April as part of the COSE/NEOSA Tech Week.   This event is being held in cooperation with the Northern Ohio Chapter of InfraGard, a partnership between the FBI and private/public sector organizations, and the State of Ohio Information Technology Department.

“Increasingly, local governments are under attack from online hackers, groups, and well-organized criminals who are after personal data, creating denial-of-service attacks, and defacing websites.  The goal of the information-sharing session is to discuss the impact of cyber-based threats on local government and how to ensure our collective performance against them.  We’re all in this together; it makes sense for us to spearhead this effort,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald.

“Northeast Ohio is fortunate to have such a strong base of IT Security professionals living and working in the area.  We’re looking forward to hosting this event. We feel Northeast Ohio’s security community will provide valuable insight to help our local governments combat cyber threats,” said Jeff Mowry, Chief Information Officer for Cuyahoga County.  “Our expectation is that many of the security professionals who attend have direct, first-hand experience in developing and executing security awareness training,” explained Mr. Mowry.

Guest speakers for the session include, David Brown, Chief Information Security Officer for the State of Ohio, along with representatives from two local IT Security firms.  The event will be held at the Freedom Square III, 4511 Rockside Road, Independence, Ohio 44131, Lower Level (LL) Meeting Room, 3:30 PM.
