Cuyahoga County to Purchase Green Energy from Renewable Sources

50% of Energy to come from MixedGreens

CLEVELAND –Cuyahoga County is finalizing a new 2‐year, $8 million energy contract with FirstEnergy Solutions. Under the new contract, Cuyahoga County will participate in a voluntary program to purchase 50% of its energy from renewable sources.

“Utilizing renewable energy sources is an important opportunity for Cuyahoga County to contribute to a healthier, sustainable environment,” says Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. “Cuyahoga County is on the leading edge of governments in Northeast Ohio by participating in a renewable energy contract of this magnitude. We encourage others to also consider the benefits of renewable energy sources.”

By participating in the FirstEnergy Solutions program, Cuyahoga County will meet any green or renewable requirements, while also supporting renewable energy technologies, such as wind farms or hydroelectric dams. 

FirstEnergy Solutions’ standard supply from renewable energy is currently at2%,which is supplied from solar and non‐solar sources. Three levels (50%, 25%, and 10%)of Green energy options called MixedGreens are offered to customers at an extra charge. Cuyahoga County is proposing to purchase the 50% level of the MixedGreens at the cost of approximately $41,000.  MixedGreens comes from a variety of renewable energy sources that may include varying percentages of solar, thermal electric, landfill gas, geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind.
