Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management Offers Free SKYWARN® Storm Spotter Training

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Cleveland MetroParks and the National Weather Service (NWS) Cleveland Office, is hosting an NWS SKYWARN® weather observer training on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Watershed Stewardship Center in Parma, Ohio at 2277 West Ridgewood Drive within the West Creek Reservation.

The training session is open to the public and there is no cost to attend. Pre-registration is not required. This training is designed to prepare citizens and public safety officials to recognize and report severe weather. Attendees can expect to learn the following techniques:

• Thunderstorm development
• Fundamentals of storm structure
• Identification of potential severe weather features
• How to recognize tornados
• Information to report and how to report it
• Basic severe weather safety tips

SKYWARN® is a national program that trains volunteers to identify and report severe weather in their local communities to the National Weather Service. There are nearly 290,000 trained SKYWARN® spotters across the United States.
