CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald today announced two new public safety initiatives that will be rolled out in the coming months.
“There is no responsibility that I take more seriously than protecting the safety and well-being of Cuyahoga County families” said FitzGerald. “That’s why I am looking forward to launching our new Emergency Operations Center and the ReadyNotify system to enhance public safety and preparedness. I am especially grateful to the Office of Emergency Management, City of Broadview Heights, and Mayor Sam Alai for their work to host the new Emergency Operations Center and better coordinate emergency response in local communities.”
FitzGerald first announced plans in 2012 to construct a unified Emergency Operations Center that could also host the Cuyahoga County Office of Emergency Management, as well as the Cuyahoga County Emergency Communications System. Pending County Council approval, groundbreaking on the new site will begin this summer.
In an agreement announced today, the City of Broadview Heights will help to implement the Cuyahoga County Public Safety Plan by hosting a state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center (EOC) over the course of a 30-year lease agreement.
"We are excited to be partnering with Cuyahoga County on such an important public safety initiative. We know that the building of the Emergency Operations Center in Broadview Heights is an example of a shared vision for public safety. I look forward to continued regional efforts and opportunities to collaborate with the County and other municipalities in the future,” said Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai.
In addition, Cuyahoga County will make the ReadyNotify mass notification system available for use by residents beginning this March. ReadyNotify will help ensure that residents receive information regarding emergency situations quickly via phone call, text message, fax, and email. ReadyNotify is a voluntary program – residents will only receive alerts they select.
The mass notification system is a secure, cloud-based application that is accessible anywhere there is an internet or data connection. The service, which is free, was designed to alert citizens, residents, and businesses on the following:
• Emergency / Non-Emergency Events
• Cuyahoga County Government News
• Cuyahoga County Building Closures
• Water Boil Alerts
• Safety Messages
• Other important information
The ReadyNotify system is being rolled out to users in three phases: Cuyahoga County Employees, Citizens, and finally, Cuyahoga Communities. The system was released to county employees in December 2013 and it’s scheduled to be released to Cuyahoga County communities in April 2014.
