CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Keybank announced today financial literacy workshops to help parents of young children best utilize the County’s new College Savings Account Program. These workshops will help families prepare for their future educational goals by setting financial goals, adjusting spending to save for college, and introducing young children to the concept of saving.
“It’s important that we, as a community, provide pathways for families to be successful in planning for their children’s future,” said FitzGerald. “In partnership with KeyBank, we are proud to help make financial literacy accessible to all Cuyahoga County residents, regardless of their background, neighborhood, or income.”
"College education can vastly improve the quality of life, and a well-educated workforce contributes to strong communities. We want as many families take advantage of this college savings program as possible," said Stephanie Turner, vice president of Corporate Responsibility at KeyBank. "With Cuyahoga County, we have worked hard to make the program simple and accessible. A structured boost like this may be exactly what a family needs to start a saving pattern that will reap significant rewards."
The Cuyahoga County College Savings Account Program is designed to increase college and vocational school graduate rates for County residents. The Program creates a flexible college savings platform wherein families can deposit additional funds and intermediaries such as schools districts, foundations, and special purpose programs will potentially provide program incentives and matching funds.
Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, Cuyahoga County will deposit $100 into a deposit-only account for each kindergarten student. For additional information, parents are encouraged to email collegesavings@cuyahogacounty.us or call (216) 698-2092.
The first two workshops are scheduled for the following dates and locations. Additional financial literacy workshops will be announced at a later time:
