Cuyahoga Officials Ask Yost to Recuse Himself from Future County Audits

CLEVELAND - Citing the State Auditor's efforts to coerce county officials in recent days by targeting their personal finances, as well as a history of personal attacks and unprofessional conduct, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Law Director Majeed G. Makhlouf today asked that State Auditor Dave Yost formally recuse himself from taking part in future audits of Cuyahoga County.
"This isn't the first time Dave Yost has gone out of his way to target Cuyahoga County or its officials, but it should be the last," said FitzGerald. "In light of his recent behavior, we think it's best that he recuse himself from signing off on the 2013 county audit and find a reputable third-party accounting firm to conduct an audit in 2014."
Yesterday, Yost threatened to go after the personal finances of Cuyahoga County officials who send vote-by-mail applications to registered County voters. In response, FitzGerald and members of the County Council jointly criticized his efforts to intimidate officials for working to promote voter participation.
In a letter sent to Yost's office Thursday afternoon, Cuyahoga County Law Director Majeed G. Makhlouf characterized Yost's recent behavior as "inappropriate and inconsistent with the ethical standards of a government auditor."
