Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Expands Access to Statistical Reports Online
Complete online archive from 1937-2012 is now available
CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson announced today that the complete catalog of the Medical Examiner’s Statistical Report is now available online – totaling more than 60 reports.“I applaud Dr. Gilson and his staff for carrying on the tradition and public service of providing thorough statistical reports to the residents of Cuyahoga County,” said County Executive FitzGerald. “Providing the complete index of the Medical Examiner’s statistical reports is just another way we are keeping our local government open and transparent.”
The Medical Examiner’s Statistical Report was first introduced by Cuyahoga County Coroner Dr. Samuel Gerber in 1937 as a service to the community. Dr. Gerber pioneered this type of extensive data collection and reporting, which were instrumental in several public health initiatives in his ground-breaking work linking alcohol consumption with accidents, as seen in his 1947 report Alcohol and Accidents. The purpose of the report has been to provide citizens of Cuyahoga County with the highest quality information through an analysis of mortality and statistics. Dr. Gilson has remained dedicated to carrying on this tradition, as it allows the study of current and historical public health trends.
“The Medical Examiner’s Statistical Report is a unique archive of professional health information that has been virtually uninterrupted over the past 75 years,” said Dr. Gilson. “I’m pleased to announce it is available online to various health professionals, researchers, as well as the general public.”
As a collection, the reports illustrate population changes, advances in safety, and societal shifts as related to mortality. Individual statistical reports include the following:
- Percentages on the Types of Cases Received
- Demographic Data (Gender, Race, Ethnicity)
- Distribution of Fatalities by City / District
- Segmented Analytics by Accident, Homicide, Suicide, Natural, and Undetermined
- Forensic Laboratory Summaries
