CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald recommended today communities to receive funding from the 2015 Municipal Grant Program. After reviewing applications from 23 communities, the review committee for the Municipal Grant Program recommended that 10 communities receive funding to make improvements to public facilities within their community.
“Our communities are suffering under the State’s continued cuts to local government funds. We are proud to be able to step in and help mitigate this wrong,” said FitzGerald. “The need is real, as evidenced by the fact that only two of the ten are first-time awardees, and yet the State continues to turn its back.”
51 of the county’s 59 communities are eligible to apply for the Municipal Grant Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The funds are used to assist municipalities with a variety of projects that meet one of the HUD National Objectives: benefit low/moderate income persons; aid in the prevention of slums and blight, or; meet other urgent community needs. Previous awarded projects have included construction on streets, ADA improvements, community center enhancements, and playground improvements.
“This highly competitive grant programs supports improvements to the quality of life in communities by addressing infrastructure issues, ADA accessibility requirements and the needs of our seniors,” said Larry Benders, Director of Development, Cuyahoga County.
