CLEVELAND - The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works, the City of Cleveland, the Ohio Department of Transportation, contractor American Bridge Company and members of the Transystems engineering and construction management team are preparing to float the new Columbus Road Lift Bridge into place on July 28, 2014, beginning at 6:00 A.M. local time.
This project is a culmination of deterioration of the bridge constructed in 1940 and through a standardized process, a rehabilitation and partial replacement was determined the best option for stakeholders. The existing lift span was floated out on June 11, 2013. The new structure has been constructed upstream from the project site concurrently as the old span was removed and floated-out.
It will take approximately one (1) day to float the new span downstream and affix to the existing 137 foot, tall truss towers that will support the new lift span. The new span is anticipated to arrive at the bridge site sometime after 2:00 PM on July 28th. After the new span is floated in, it will take approximately, sixty (60) days to complete the testing and finalize the balance of the work. The bridge is anticipated to open to traffic in mid-October 2014.
A safe viewing area has been established adjacent to Merwin's Wharf Restaurant located in Cleveland Metroparks Rivergate Park on the east bank of the river, 1785 Merwin Avenue, Cleveland 44113. Please be advised that on street parking is very limited in the area surrounding the bridge. Vehicles illegally parked will be ticketed. Public parking is available either on-street or in private lots near the intersection of Center Street and Columbus Road.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Information Department, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at 216-348-3824.
