New Cuyahoga County Administrative Headquarters Officially Opens for Business

CLEVELAND – In a ceremony this afternoon Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, County Council President C. Ellen Connally, and Fred Geis of Geis Companies officially opened the new Cuyahoga County Administrative Headquarters. The headquarters is located at 2079 East 9th Street and will be home to more than 600 County employees.
“The new Administrative Headquarters is a building for the residents of Cuyahoga County,” said County Executive Ed FitzGerald. “Built for accessibility and efficiency, the headquarters marks the return of the Ameritrust complex to the private sector and the revitalization of a long-dormant corner of downtown Cleveland. Surrounded by the thriving Playhouse Square district and the new Convention Center and rising hotel just blocks away, this building is just one of many exciting projects bringing new life to the city.”
Geis Companies has invested more than $260 million in the former Ameritrust complex, helping to revitalize a once-dormant section of downtown Cleveland. As a part of the East 9th Street and Prospect Avenue corner, the headquarters will be joined by a Heinen's grocery store in the historic rotunda; apartments, office space, and retail in the Swetland building; and a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel and luxury apartments in the Tower.
“This is another step under the Charter form of County Government as we move into our new County Headquarters. I am excited to be a part of the revitalization of this area of downtown and am thrilled this building is serving as an economic development catalyst” said Council President C. Ellen Connally. “I would like to thank all my colleagues on Council, the Geis brothers and the employees of Geis Companies, and the County Executive for all their hard work on making this the new home of Cuyahoga County Government.”
Built and owned by Geis Companies, the headquarters will be leased to the county for 26 years with the option to purchase for $1 at the end of that lease. Construction on the eight-story, 220,000 square foot facility began in April 2013. The County set a requirement to hire 40% “in-county workforce,” including 20% Minority Business Enterprises and Female Business Enterprises. Geis not only met, but exceed this goal, by hiring 47% of its workforce from Cuyahoga County and 52% Minority Business Enterprises or Female Business Enterprises.
“You won’t find a better workforce anywhere. Friendly, focused and surpassed all my expectations when it came to delivering this project,” said Fred Geis.
The move to the headquarters is a major component of the County’s Real Estate Property Consolidation Project. The consolidation of county operations will result in a potential savings of $84 million over 20 years. The Silver LEED certified headquarters is designed to be a conveniently centralized location for the public to conduct business as well as an energy efficient building.
The site of the former Cuyahoga County Administration Building is now home to the new Hilton Cleveland/Downtown Convention Center Hotel that is scheduled to open spring 2016, just prior to the 2016 Republican National Convention.
