CLEVELAND Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish announced today that the Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment season signed up 47,388 newly insured consumers in the Greater Cleveland Area, proportionally outpacing most Midwest metropolitan statistical areas.

"This is an important step to getting area residents the healthcare coverage they need,” said County Executive Budish. “I’m excited to see that the collaborative efforts of our County administration, United Way, and all of our community partners made a significant difference for the people of Northeast Ohio. My administration is striving to make sure that all of our residents have the opportunity to obtain health care coverage."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 1 million Ohio residents including 94,000 low-income children were uninsured. The 2015 open enrollment season brought in 234,507 new Ohio consumers including the nearly 50,000 Northeast Ohio residents that will now be able to have reduced health care costs and overall improved health and quality of care.

Nationally, there has been an historic decrease in the uninsured. In just one year the number of uninsured reduced by about 10 million people. Millions of Americans have signed up for health coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace.  And 3 million young adults have gained coverage through a parent’s plan.

Affordable Care Act, Ohio joined twenty-eight other states last year in offering expanded Medicaid health coverage. Approximately 90,000 county residents who registered for expanded Medicaid health coverage are reminded to re-apply for Medicaid eligibility. Our County administration has created the Renew Medicaid 1-2-3 program to encourage those eligible for Medicaid renewal to follow any one of three steps in order to maintain their benefits.

Those steps are:
  1. Reapply online at www.benefits.ohio.gov
  2. Call 2-1-1 for assistance and questions
  3. Visit a County JFS Neighborhood Family Service Center
