Cleveland, OH – Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish today joined Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, County Councilmen Dale Miller, Anthony Hairston, and Yvonne Conwell, as well as local community and faith leaders and medical providers to launch a collaborative effort to encourage 90,000 county residents to reapply for Medicaid eligibility.

“It’s very important that we make sure that every person eligible for Medicaid knows what they have to do to maintain their benefits,” said Budish. “That’s why we’re going to do everything we can in the weeks ahead to make sure working families can keep their Medicaid benefits and access quality, affordable health care when they need it.”

Under the law, 90,000 recipients who began to receive benefits following the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act are now required to reapply in order to maintain their eligibility. These are typically working families that earn less than $15,000. If they fail to reapply for benefits, recipients could lose their benefits as early as the end of this month.

The campaign launched today, Renew Medicaid 1-2-3, encourages those eligible for Medicaid renewal to follow any one of three steps in order to maintain their benefits. Those steps are:

  1. Reapply online at www.benefits.ohio.gov
  2. Call 2-1-1 for assistance and questions
  3. Visit a County JFS Neighborhood Family Service Center

In the weeks ahead, Cuyahoga County will work with medical providers and local government, non-profit, faith, and community leaders in order to encourage eligible residents to reapply for their Medicaid benefits. Budish has directed the County to process all applications as quickly as possible and to designate additional staff to answer walk-in questions in wait rooms.

In addition, computer labs will be available at the Quincy Place and Old Brooklyn JFS Neighborhood Family Service Centers to process applications, both the Cleveland and Cuyahoga County libraries will make computers available for Medicaid renewals, and the County will mail a worksheet on completing the renewal application with a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope to residents who were informed by the State of Ohio that they will be losing their benefits.
