CUYAHOGA COUNTY – Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish proudly announces the appointment of Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson to the Board of Directors for the Ohio State Coroners Association (OSCA). Dr. Gilson, who has been involved with OSCA since his arrival to Cuyahoga County in 2011, officially began his 2-year term as Member, Board of Directors on May 8th, 2015.

“Cuyahoga County is proud of Dr. Gilson, not only for being named a member of the Ohio State Coroners Association’s Board of Directors, but also for his continued service and great work leading our Medical Examiner’s Office,” said County Executive Armond Budish. “This recognition of excellence by his colleagues serves as another testament to Dr. Gilson’s hard work and dedication to medicolegal investigation.”

“It is an honor to be asked to serve in this way for the state coroners' association and I am looking forward to joining my colleagues in this work.” said Dr. Gilson. “Forensic science, and death investigation in particular, are currently undergoing re-evaluation at a national level and this will be an important time for us in the Ohio State Coroners' Association to focus on priorities and best practices that come out of that review.”

The Ohio State Coroners Association is a professional organization designated for Ohio’s 88 Coroners/Medical Examiners. These are licensed physicians who investigate sudden, unexpected and/or suspicious deaths. OSCA duties include:
  • Discussing administrative, professional, and ethical matters affecting coroners.
  • Establishing a continuing education curriculum.
  • Exchanging professional experiences.
  • Promoting programs that enable the general public to better understand the vital role coroners play in today’s society.
“Dr. Gilson will be a valuable addition to the OSCA Board of Directors due to his extensive experience as a forensic pathologist and Medical Examiner.  We look forward to working with him during the two years of his term.” said David Corey, OSCA Executive Director.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office was also recently successful in continuing its full accreditation from the National Association of Medical Examiner’s (NAME). Accreditation by NAME is an honor, and signifies that the office is performing at a high level of competence and public service.
