CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Director of Sustainability, Mike Foley, issued the following statement to express his disappointment at the US Supreme Court ruling finding that the US EPA overstepped its authority in implementing rules to reduce Mercury emissions from power sources:
“Coal fired power plants are some of the most toxic and dirty generators of electricity in the country. As noted in Justice Kagan’s extensive dissent, the US EPA bent over backwards to justify the costs society must bear because of these polluting facilities.
At a time when there is more awareness of the scientific, economic and moral consequences of global warming, the majority in the US Supreme Court just took a big step backwards and allowed rational regulations to be side-stepped.”
