Cleveland, Ohio - Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Sunny Simon and Cuyahoga County Director of Sustainability Mike Foley, issued the following statement:

We want to express our deep dissatisfaction with the proposed First Energy rate case settlement currently before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

First Energy supplies the vast majority of electricity to customers in Cuyahoga County. The proposed settlement would both increase electricity costs for First Energy customers and subsidize a source of electricity generation – the Sammis coal fired power plant – that pollutes the environment. At a time when leaders across the world are discussing ways to minimize Co2 pollution in Paris, we should not be encouraging the generation of more power based on dirty and dangerous methods.

Sunny Simon is County Councilwoman from District 11 and is Chair of the Education, Environment and Sustainability Committee.

Mike Foley is Director of the Cuyahoga County Department of Sustainability.
