Towpath Trail Groundbreaking Celebrated Construction Beginning on $18.5M Stage of Project

CLEVELAND - Today, public officials from Cuyahoga County, the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks, Canalway Partners, ODOT, and NOACA broke ground on Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project at Clark Field in Cleveland.
Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project will run 1.9 miles from the northern entrance of Steelyard Commons to Literary Ave., providing an important link between the populous Cleveland neighborhood Tremont, the employment and retail center Steelyard Commons and the public outdoor recreation area Clark Field.
Stage 3 is the longest stage in the Towpath Trail Extension Project and will offer unique views of industry, the downtown skyline and the historic Tremont neighborhood. Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension will cost about $18.5M and create 30 acres of new public park space in the City of Cleveland.
“The Towpath Trail Groundbreaking was a great way to kick off Earth Day- with a show of support for public greenspace and alternative transportation connections. We’re opening up 30 acres of new public park space, and that’s a big deal” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish.
“It is because of our strong partnerships and shared vision that the Towpath Trail continues to evolve, better connecting the people of Greater Cleveland to the natural resources and growing park space in their community” said Brian Zimmerman of Cleveland Metroparks.
“The Towpath Trail project helps meet the goals for the City’s Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Initiative. Its completion is a priority for the City and for the region tying greenspace to our urban infrastructure and our neighborhoods,” said Edward W. Rybka, Chief of Regional Development. The Towpath Trail Extension Project is developed through a four-party project development between Cuyahoga County, City of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks and Canalway Partners.
