CLEVELAND – A recent report released by Inspector General Mark Griffin revealed that the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works has made significant improvements to the management of road and bridge projects. The Cuyahoga County Agency of Inspector General released a report that found that 72% of road and bridge projects completed between 2013 to 2016, were completed for less than the initial estimate. The report examined the Department of Public Works ability to complete road and bridge projects within the initial estimate and, separately, within the projected budget established after the completion of competitive bidding.
“Your county government is focused on creating efficiencies and savings through continuous improvement,” said Sharon Sobol Jordan, Cuyahoga County Chief of Staff. “The report released by the Inspector General confirms that we are taking the necessary steps to deliver efficient, effective services to our residents. I’d like to personally thank Director Dever and his team for their dedicated services.”
Every project started and completed since the beginning of Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish’s administration has come in at or below budget.
“The County has really tightened up its contracting process. Public Works tries to competitively bid as many projects as possible and change orders are now carefully scrutinized,” said Griffin.
In 2016, Public Works actual expenditures were less than estimates and bids. Of the eight projects started in 2016, six have been completed. Of the completed six projects, estimates equal $7,666,941.00 and the total bid amounts equal $6,971,896.26. Project expenditures for the year add up to $6,406,571.17.
“The Inspector General’s report is a testament to the skilled and dedicated Public Works staff,” said Michael Dever, Cuyahoga County Director of Public Works. “As stewards to the taxpayer dollars, we are committed to providing a safe and reliable infrastructure in a cost-conscious manner.”
