STOP Violence Against Women Act Grant

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Cuyahoga County remains committed to supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Through the STOP Violence Against Women Act grant award, the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Safety and Justice Services is providing $66,972 to the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center for their Direct Services for Survivors Project and $125,239 to the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center (DVCAC) for the Latina Domestic Violence Project.
“We are committed to funding local projects that provide the resources needed to assist victims of abuse,” said County Executive Armond Budish. “The STOP Violence Against Women Act has helped thousands of our residents in need. I am particularly pleased to see our funding directed to populations with specific needs that we can help to address, and we are proud to take part in this important initiative.”
The Latina Domestic Violence Project provides comprehensive services for Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence and their families. Latinas who are in abusive situations can face challenges such language barriers, lack of access to culturally sensitive services and may have limited knowledge of the laws designed to assist them. The funding will assist with counseling, safety planning, a culturally competent hotline and shelter assistance.
The Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center Latina Project served 162 victims in 2017. Out of those, 54 percent received legal advocacy support as well as shelter and employment services. In addition, DVCAC received 1,254 hotline/crises calls from Latina/o victims. Over 78 percent of the temporary protection orders that were filed were granted.
The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center’s Direct Services for Survivors Project funding helps support survivors of sexual assault through its 24-hour crisis hotline and provides advocates to assist victims through medical and legal processes. The funding also assists Cleveland Rape Crisis Center with outreach and awareness of the services provided within Cuyahoga County through the organization’s collaboration with law enforcement, social organizations and with the medical community.
The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center served 1,771 victims in 2017. Seventy-nine percent of those were women. Of the total victims served, 55 percent received counseling services and 44 percent received victims’ advocacy services. The hotline calls totaled 6,535.
