2nd Annual Your Voice Matters Youth Summit

Event Promotes Youth Voting and Civic Engagement
CUYAHOGA COUNTY –Today high school students from around the county learned how to get involved and make a difference in their schools and community by having their voices heard through voting and other forms of civic engagement.
“The right to vote is an essential aspect of our democratic form of government. As we continue to face challenging times, where some are trying to make it harder to vote, we need to do more to help our residents get registered,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish.
Local leaders from the county, city, Tri-C, and other civic organizations shared just how important it is for young people to be engaged on the issues that matter to them and their community. The summit was a unique opportunity for teens and young adults to discuss topics like “Who’s going to change the world?” and “What do you want from county government?” The event is designed to motivate students to be active voters, leaders, thinkers, and change agents in their schools and communities.
“NOVA applauds Cuyahoga County's efforts to increase voting,” said Susan Alcorn, President, Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates. “Voting is a commitment to ourselves, our community, and the highest ideals of democracy. We recommend that all registered voters proactively check their registration status at the Board of Elections (boe.cuyahogacounty.us "my voting info"), especially if they've moved or haven't voted in a long time.”
The summit also provided vital information on being an informed voter and the Voter Registration Act. Students developed voter registration action plans to implement at their high schools in order to educate and engage their peers about the importance of being registered and voting.
This event was presented with help from: Cleveland City Council, Cuyahoga County Council, For Our Future, Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates (NOVA), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), The Cleveland Foundation, The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), Cuyahoga Community College, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, and The Cuyahoga Black Caucus (TCBC).
