Cuyahoga County to Celebrate National Adoption Month with Event Series
CLEVELAND -- To commemorate National Adoption Month, Cuyahoga County and the Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) will host several events to promote and celebrate adoption. Events include a free screening of the new film, Instant Family; an adoption finalization ceremony at the DCFS headquarters, a party for adoptive families at a local amusement center, and a recognition event at a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game.
“Adopting a child is the ultimate act of love,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish. “So it’s important to take time out to recognize and celebrate those who have already taken that step. And for the children still waiting for a home, it’s equally important to encourage our local families to consider making room in their hearts and families for an adopted child.”
Cuyahoga County currently has close to 200 children up for adoption. Available children range in age from 0-17 and come from a variety of backgrounds. Many have siblings also up for adoption, and several children have special needs.
“There are so many children who need families in our community right now —more kids than we’ve had in years, and certainly more than we currently have families for,” said DCFS Director Cynthia Weiskittel. “I want to see each of these children find their forever home.”
To date, 102 children have been adopted in Cuyahoga County this year. Of those, 18 children had been in county custody for five years or more.
