CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County-based consumer protection agencies are uniting to help people learn about their consumer rights during National Consumer Protection Week, which runs from March 3-9.

This year, for the first time, consumer call-in events will include bilingual staffers who can field questions in English and Spanish.
  • WKYC Channel 3 will host a combined consumer call-in and Facebook Live event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7. To reach consumer advocates during the event, dial 1-216-377-4370. Consumers also can view the livestreamed event and post questions at www.facebook.com/WKYC.Channel3/.
  • WEWS Channel 5 will host a consumer call-in from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 8. To get consumer help, dial 1-800-658-5370 during event hours.
  • The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and Federal Trade Commission are hosting a brief legal advice clinic from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Cleveland Public Library Rockport Branch, 4421 W. 140th St, Cleveland. The event is first come, first served and is geared toward consumer and civil issues.

“Sometimes people aren’t sure where to turn when they get misleading sales offers, have a problem with a purchase or struggle with debt,” said Sheryl Harris, Director of the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs. “This week’s events are designed to get people advice they need now but also to remind them that free, reliable consumer help is available anytime.”

Nonprofits and government agencies participating in the week’s events include Apprisen, the Better Business Bureau Serving Greater Cleveland, Cleveland Department of Consumer Affairs, Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs, Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Ohio Attorney General’s Office, ProSeniors, U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Postal Inspection Service. All are members of CCAN, the Cleveland Consumer Action Network.
