The Federal Government’s Shut Down and the Impact on the Supplemental Nutritional Food Assistance Program in Cuyahoga County

The federal government has been shut down since December 22, 2018. As a result, funding for federal public benefits, including funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), will be impacted for an undetermined amount of time.
“We are doing all we can to ensure that SNAP recipients are issued their benefits promptly,” said Cuyahoga County Job and Family Services Administrator Kevin Gowan.
The plan from the State of Ohio is that most of all current SNAP customers will receive their February benefits by January 16. The remaining SNAP recipients will receive benefits at the time of certification. It is anticipated that no other benefit issuance will be made until counties are informed by the State of ongoing developments with the federal shutdown. Any updates will be posted on cjfs.cuyahogacounty.us.
“Despite the government shutdown, our staff are working overtime and diligently to process the applications so that our residents who need food assistance get it,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish.
Community members can still apply for SNAP using one of three ways:
Submitting totally completed applications and providing the necessary documentation helps avoid delays. Current applicants should be prepared to supply verifications and take part in any required interviews. Additionally, if you plan to visit a NFSC, there is no need to call ahead or call the contact center. Finally, if you miss the call-in time in your appointment letter, please call back when it is convenient for you.
Other community resources offering help include The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland and United Way 2-1-1. Additionally, our community partner the Greater Cleveland Food Bank has a help center at 216-738-2067 to answer questions and make service referrals.
