CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County has approved a $450,000 HOME Fund forgivable loan for the Medina Creative Living project, a sixteen-unit apartment complex that will be in the City of Middleburg Heights on the site of a long vacant YWCA building. The apartments will be constructed by Medina Creative Housing (MCH), a private non-profit organization that provides permanent, affordable housing to people with developmental disabilities and links those people to supportive services. The County will also provide $100,000 in funding to Middleburg Heights to demolish the vacant YWCA site.

“I am pleased that the County is part of this important initiative,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish. “This new project will not only provide needed, affordable housing, but it will replace a blighted existing building with homes for individuals with developmental disabilities.”

Medina Creative Housing will construct four clusters of three apartments and two clusters of two apartments. The 550 square feet apartments will include a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, patio and vaulted ceilings.

“Medina Creative Housing strives to integrate individuals with disabilities into the community,” stated Chief Executive Officer of Medina Creative Housing Dianne DePasquale-Hagerty. “We are so appreciative of the receptivity to our housing that we have received from the City of Middleburg Heights, as well as the confidence placed in our organization by Cuyahoga County which has provided needed funding enabling our project to move forward. Sixteen individuals with disabilities will soon have the opportunity to live the American Dream, in a home of their own which has been designed to meet their specific needs.”

“We are excited that Medina Creative Housing selected Middleburg Heights to provide housing for an underserved market—permanent supportive housing for people with developmental disabilities. We look forward to working with the County and Medina Creative Housing as a former blighted building is removed and the new development progresses,” said Middleburg Heights Mayor Matt Castelli.

Medina Creative Housing also provides an entire lifestyle for its clients, including social and recreational opportunities, life skills training, vocational training and well-paying jobs. The MCH emphasis on social interaction and its Resident Enrichment Program, which sponsors daily recreational and educational activities, enable residents to establish friendships and peer support networks. Residents at Medina Creative Living will experience a sense of inclusion, compared to the social isolation many deal with prior to moving into an MCH apartment.
