Medical Examiner’s Office Announces Inaugural Citizens Academy Program

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson today announced the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office is now accepting applications for its inaugural Citizens Academy.
"The Medical Examiner’s Office and Regional Laboratory is excited to offer the Citizens Academy to our County residents. We are deeply indebted to our County residents for their generous support in helping us create a premier forensic office here in Cuyahoga County,” said Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Gilson.
“This deeper look at the medical examiner’s office and crime lab will give our residents a chance to see how the agency impacts the health and safety of our community.”
The academy, held at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, will meet Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7:30pm. Residents can expect to participate in lectures, case reviews, and hands-on demonstrations from a variety of doctors, scientists, and investigators. Some of the topics include:
“If you have an interest in forensic science or death investigations, then this is the program for you,” said Christopher Harris, External Affairs Manager for the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office. “This is a great opportunity for residents to get an inside look and understanding of how our agency works.”
The Citizen’s Academy is free of charge and open to all eligible residents. Eligibility requirements include:

- Autopsy
- Trace Evidence
- Drug Chemistry
- Death Investigation

- Resident of Cuyahoga County
- At least 21 years of age
- No felony convictions
- Must pass a background check
