CLEVELAND – The Cuyahoga County Office of Reentry, the U.S. Pretrial and Probation Services for the Northern District of Ohio and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank are holding the 2019 Greater Cleveland Returned Citizen Symposium: Building Wealth and Inspiring Civic Engagement for formerly incarcerated individuals. The Symposium will be held at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, 15500 S. Waterloo Rd, Cleveland, Ohio, 44110, on Saturday, June 1st from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
This event will celebrate individuals’ successful reentry into the community and bring them together to discuss civic engagement and wealth building. Attendees can expect to outline a community vision that is more inclusive of returning citizens, and incorporates their dream of a successful reintegration process after a period of incarceration.
“There are thousands of individuals living in Cuyahoga County with a criminal history or who have spent time in a correctional facility,” said Crystal Bryant, Director of the Cuyahoga County Office of Reentry. “These individuals face numerous barriers upon their reentry because of their criminal background and are sometimes excluded from forums and spaces that are meant to serve them. The symposium is an opportunity for returning citizens to unite their voices, hear from speakers that are passionate about their successful reentry and create a community vision that is inclusive of their needs.”
“The United States Pretrial Services and Probation Office is pleased to partner with Cuyahoga County Office of Reentry to host the Reentry Symposium,” said Robin Grimes, Chief U.S. Pretrial Services and Probation Officer for the Northern District of Ohio. “Our agency strives to encourage long term positive change for individuals we serve. The upcoming Reentry Symposium provides an opportunity for the U.S. Pretrial Services and Probation Office to inform returning citizens of the resources and tools that are available to assist in their healthy and positive transition to the community.”
Confirmed speakers for this event include The Honorable Benita Y. Pearson, U.S. District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio; Councilman Michael Polensek, Cleveland City Councilman of Ward 8; Damian Calvert, Project Coordinator for the City of Cleveland Community Relations Board; Robin Grimes, Chief of U.S. Pretrial Services and Probation Office for the Northern District of Ohio; DaMareo Cooper, Organizing Director for The Ohio Organizing Collaborative; and LaRick Calhoun, Marketing Consultant for 2Excel Group.
The event is free and open to the public but registration is highly encouraged. Members from the press are also encouraged to attend; RSVPs can be sent to Katrice Willliams at katrice.williams@jfs.ohio.gov or (216) 698-2326.
