Schilling Jr. and Smith Have Over 45 Years of Experience as Deputy Sheriffs
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Cuyahoga County announced today the hiring of Sgt. David G. Schilling Jr. as the acting sheriff, a 25-year veteran of the County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Schilling has 15 years of supervisory experience serving in the rank of Deputy Sheriff and has 20 years of experience conducting comprehensive investigations. His current roles include Supervisor of the Use of Deadly Force Investigations Team and the Officer in Charge for Internal Affairs-Inspectional Services.
Lt. Bryan Smith will be Interim Chief Deputy. Smith has 22 years of experience in the Sheriff’s office, most recently holding the position of Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant.
“We are pleased to announce two leadership appointments at the Sheriff’s Department. Sgt. David Schilling’s 25-year experience with the Sheriff’s department and knowledge of law enforcement provide the leadership we need for the job. He will hit the ground running and he’s prepared to work with Jail Administrator Gibson and her team to tackle the issues facing the jail,” said County Executive Armond Budish.
“Lt. Bryan Smith will serve as Interim Chief Deputy. His breadth of experience, 22 years from field operations to investigations, demonstrates his ability to lead on the everyday and long-range issues that face the Sheriff’s Deputies,” said Budish. “His leadership skills are respected within the department and by the municipalities he’s worked with in his capacity with the IMPACT Unit. We’re happy to have both of them lead the Sheriff’s Office.”
Since the appointment last week of Lt. Smith was an interim appointment, the Law Department opined that the residency requirement did not apply. “After further reflection and discussion, and out of an abundance of caution, we chose to appoint Lt. Bryan Smith as the Interim Chief Deputy Sheriff and Sgt. David Schilling as the Interim Sheriff,” said Budish’s Chief of Staff Bill Mason.
It is anticipated that the Board of Control will authorize funds for a search firm to assist with the hiring of the next Sheriff.
