Cuyahoga County Kicks Off BYOBag and Bag Giveaway Program

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Cuyahoga County leaders kicked off their BYOBag and reusable bag giveaway programs today to help residents and businesses begin the transition to reusable bags. The event, hosted at the Euclid Senior Center, was attended by some 200 seniors who learned about the ban and were given free reusable bags.
“We couldn’t be more excited to get this program underway,” said County Councilwoman, Sunny Simon, sponsor of the ban. “Remembering to bring your reusable bag is a simple thing we can do to help protect the environment for all of us.”
Dan Donovan of Giant Eagle, which stopped using plastic bags in their stores in December before the ban started, announced that the company has already seen a reduction of at least 1.8 million plastic bags in the few weeks their program has been underway. Similar success was noted by Orange Village Council President Brandon Duber, who explained that their community’s program has been an overwhelming success with a seamless transition.
“We look forward to working together with residents, retailers and organizations to ensure this is a success for all of us,” said County Councilman Dale Miller.
Later this week, the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District will provide over 20,000 free reusable bags to organizations that serve the public. These include food pantries, churches, senior centers and other non-profits who applied for a quantity of bags to distribute to people who may have difficulty affording or obtaining reusable bags. In addition to giveaways, Cuyahoga County and the Solid Waste District will be working together on additional programs to help make sure everyone has easy, affordable access to reusable bags.
“All of us can play a part—and we are going to do all we can to help,” said Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District Director, Diane Bickett.
“Lake Erie and our local waterways are one of our greatest resources,” said Euclid Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer-Gail. “We’re looking forward to this really making a difference.”
The county’s bag ban went into effect on January 1, but enforcement is being delayed until July 1 to make the transition easier for everyone.
