$300,000 Will Provide Virtual Platform Accessible Through OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH
– County Executive Armond Budish announced today that the County is pledging $150,000 toward the creation of virtual job fairs for the residents of Cuyahoga County, in partnership with OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County and the Mandel Supporting Foundation at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March, approximately 120,000 people in Cuyahoga County have filed for unemployment. Meanwhile, there are many companies looking to hire thousands of people in the County, including manufacturers, distributors, grocery stores and many others. The challenge is to connect them.

In June, OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County will host a Virtual Job Fair week that will provide a platform for employers to describe their hiring needs, products, services, career pathways, workplace culture, and how to apply. OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County will also reach out to the job seekers to facilitate job matching opportunities including providing help preparing their resumes and getting ready for an interview. The Mandel Supporting Foundation has also contributed $150,000 to this initiative.

“Before coronavirus, job fairs in local facilities were a great way for employers and employees to make connections,” said County Executive Armond Budish. “With social distancing this isn’t possible, but we know that now more than ever our residents need access to employment opportunities and resources. I am grateful for this partnership with OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County and the Mandel Supporting Foundation for their contributions and support on this initiative.”

“One of the highest forms of philanthropy in our tradition is to help someone find work to support themselves,” said Steve Hoffman, President, Mandel Supporting Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. “That’s what we hope this project will do for many of our neighbors in our county.”

With the transition to virtual job fairs, those who are currently unconnected also need to be supported. Twenty-five percent of Cuyahoga County residents do not have internet access in the home. Therefore, the County has partnered with PCs for People to provide 1,000 job seeks with computers, hotspots and three months of internet access to assist during their job search. The County’s SkillUp initiative will also provide access for these 1,000 job seekers to utilize an online job skills training program and assist in making sure everyone is able to apply for jobs while being properly prepared for their work.

OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County is continuing to recruit companies to participate in the Virtual Job Fairs. If your company is hiring, please call 216-777-8202 to participate.

“We understand that getting Cuyahoga County residents back to work is essential right now and we are dedicated to doing our part to make this happen,” said Frank Bricker, Interim Executive Director, OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County. “OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County is here to help people find the right education, training, and employment to advance their careers. Our Virtual Job Fairs provide a unique opportunity for people to meet employers and apply for jobs in an innovative way.”
