Light the Night to Shape Your Future Townhall with Local Leaders

Tune in and Turn On Your Lights June 24 to Promote Racial Equity and a Complete Census Count
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - On June 24 the Cuyahoga County Complete Count Committee plans to “light the night” with inspiring dialogue about racial equity and the 2020 Census with a virtual townhall taking place at 6 p.m. on the County’s YouTube channel.
Viewers will hear from local leaders U. S. Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, Councilwoman Shontel Brown and Tri-C President Emeritus Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton.
Afterward, the Terminal Tower will light up in a community-wide show of support for racial equity and a complete 2020 Census count. County residents and organizations are invited to also turn on their lights June 24 to share the message. The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. A complete count of every resident in Cuyahoga County will ensure the County receives its fair share of federal funding for schools, roads and services for it residents. In the 2010 Census, Cuyahoga County’s self-response rate was 65.3 percent. Currently, the County’s 2020 self-response rate stands at 62.5 percent.
“The 2020 Census is important for every resident living in Cuyahoga County and affects each of us in more ways than we may realize,” said County Executive Armond Budish. “The census is also an opportunity for people of color, who have historically been left out of our nation’s power structure, to make their voices heard. Federal agencies rely on census data to monitor discrimination and implement civil rights laws that protect voting rights, equal employment opportunity, and more. I hope this tele-townhall discussion helps convey the true importance of filling out the census.”
Led by County Executive Armond Budish and Tri-C President Emeritus Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, the Cuyahoga Complete Count Committee is comprised of over 100 community leaders working together to obtain a complete 2020 Census count. Through advocacy, outreach and collaboration, the committee is dedicated to ensuring that every resident is counted.
