President Trump’s Move to Eliminate Immigrants’ Responses to 2020 Census

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - County Executive Armond Budish released the following statement:
“By now, it should come as no surprise that President Trump is no friend to immigrants. From the building of the wall, to detaining children and separating children from their parents, the President has been laser-focused on marginalizing immigrants.
“And he continues his aggressive tactics. When President Trump declared that there would be a question on citizenship in the 2020 Census, people were justifiably upset. Thankfully, the Supreme Court declined to allow the citizenship question on the census, recognizing that the census is constitutionally required to count every individual in the United States, no matter their status. The Supreme Court decided that a citizenship question would likely cause some to refuse to answer the census, causing an undercount leading to less federal funding and representation in Congress.
“Now, President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the Secretary of Commerce to remove undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census. So that even if people DO fill out the census, their responses will be filtered out. This order will definitely result in an inaccurate count, a count that we rely on for crucial funding and representation here in Cuyahoga County.
“This tactic is unfair, improper, and in violation of the Supreme Court precedent. This move should be strongly opposed. The census has always been and should continue to be non-partisan and not politically motivated. We cannot let the egregious actions of the President change this.”
