CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - County Executive Armond Budish issued the following statement:

"There’s a classic Disney children’s song with the refrain: 'The mail must go through. The mail must go through. No matter if it rains or snows. The mail must go through.'

"President Trump is rewriting the lyrics, adding: 'Unless we’re having an election. Then the mail must not go through.'

"Because of the pandemic, voting in this election is going to be very different; many of us are going to be relying on the mail to get our voices heard.

"But the President is doing his very best to undermine your vote (no matter your party affiliation). Today, one of our most basic, trusted services, the United States Postal Service, is under attack by our President. We have counted on the Postal Service since it was first established in 1775 with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster. The Postal Service is expressly authorized in the U.S. Constitution.

"Last week, Trump stated unequivocally that he would not support providing the necessary funds to the Postal Service because of the service’s role in mail-in voting. It seems that the President has conveniently forgotten that the mail service is about more than voting. It is about our seniors who receive their medications through the mail, our veterans who receive their benefit checks, people who mail rent or mortgage payments who are finding that their payments are weeks (weeks!) late.

"President Obama accused Trump of lying to 'actively kneecap the Postal Service' to limit mail-in voting.

"And recently, the Postal Service (under the leadership put in place by President Trump) has removed mailboxes in at least two cities.

"Undermining our Postal Service is dangerous and irresponsible.

"President Trump’s comments alone are likely to cause voters to doubt whether a mailed-in vote will be counted. This is scary, and it feels like there is nothing we can do. But that is not true.

"Here’s what you can do now: first, request a ballot from our Board of Elections and mail in your ballot ASAP. Don’t wait: you can also drop off your ballot at the BOE if you wish at 2925 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, 44115.

"Here’s what else you can do: contact your U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative; these are the people who are actually constructing the relief bill that will (or won’t) fund the Postal Service.

"Despite his bluster, the President doesn’t actually have the authority to direct spending for the USPS.

"So, let’s do what the Founders intended. Let’s use our voices and our votes and demand support for our most basic services so that ALL of our voices, no matter what our values and opinions, can be heard. And let’s fulfill the message that even our young children know: “the mail must go through.”
