CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - County Executive Armond Budish issued the following statement:

"Today Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced his intention to go before the Ohio Controlling Board and ask them to fund postage for Ohioans who wish to vote by mail this November election.

"This is an important and necessary move. Our local Board of Election is already seeing unprecedented requests for ballots, 40,000 at last count. Which, as Board of Elections Director Anthony Perlatti says, is 40,000 ahead of where they were this same time 4 years ago.

"In other words, the demand is tremendous. People want to vote AND they want to feel safe – so record numbers of them are going to vote by mail.

"But the barriers to voting by mail are real. First, you have to request your ballot by sending in an application. Then, you have to receive the ballot and mail it. But before you can mail it you need to go to the post office and get the necessary postage.

"For some this is no big deal; for others particularly those who are poor, work long hours, have little flexibility and have little to no access to transportation – the postage can be a real challenge.

"We need to make voting for ALL no matter what party affiliation as accessible as possible, especially in the light of COVID-19. People who might have gone to vote in person but who are vulnerable will be voting by mail.

"I appreciate Secretary Frank LaRose’s move and hope that the Controlling Board sees fit to fund postage for the November elections."
