If Approved by Council, County Will Work to Support Highly Resilient Energy Grids Throughout the Region
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - County Executive Armond Budish put forth a proposal to County Council today seeking approval to give Cuyahoga County the authority to establish a public utility, like those of municipal utility companies, to construct microgrids throughout the County.
Microgrids can generate electricity, heating and cooling, distribute energy and manage energy consumption. Microgrids provide a reliable energy source, as they ensure power is not lost when the main grid is offline.
“The goal of a microgrid is to provide highly resilient power to businesses and commercial entities that need it,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish. “These microgrids would offer businesses the most reliable electric power in the world—providing power that has an up-time of 99.999 percent and the guarantee that, even if the main power grid goes down, those on the microgrid won’t lose power for more than 5 minutes in a year.”
“Our Brooklyn landfill solar project proved the concept. We are getting hundreds of thousands of hours of clean electricity from it, built with Ohio panels, racking systems and labor. We will build from this example, with a focus on clean energy, resilience and support for the local economy,” said Cuyahoga County Director of Sustainability Mike Foley.
If authorized by Council, the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works would issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to seek bids from developer operators and investors who would construct the system, supported by the County. The developer operators would construct the generation and distribution facilities and sell energy to individual commercial customers in specific geographic regions.
