Do your part to decrease pollution by reducing vehicle engine idling!

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - Today, Cuyahoga County is under an air quality advisory, meaning that the air quality may be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as those with certain medical conditions, the elderly, and children. Today and every day, it is important that motorists avoid idling vehicle engines. Idling releases soot into the air and contributes to pollution and haze. Cuyahoga County employees are doing their part by adhering to the County’s Idle Reduction policy for all County fleet vehicles.

Air pollution is a major public health concern in Ohio.  Pollutants can cause or aggravate lung illnesses including acute respiratory infections, asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and lung cancer.  Exhaust from vehicles is a substantial source of ozone precursors and particulate matter.  Vehicle engine idling decreases air quality and increases many health risks.

“Cuyahoga County instituted, and County employees observe the idle reduction policy because it is the right thing to do for our environment, and the health of our residents,” said Jenita McGowan, Chief of Climate and Sustainability.  “In addition, we know that by not idling, we save tax dollars by reducing maintenance costs and increasing the fuel efficiency of our fleet.”

In addition to contributing to air pollution, vehicle engine idling produces zero miles per gallon and wastes fuel. Idling also causes twice the wear on internal parts compared to driving at regular speeds.  The break-even point for shutting off and restarting gasoline engines or leaving the engine to run idle is 30 seconds – in terms of both emissions and fuel consumption.

By joining Cuyahoga County in the commitment to reduce idling, you contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment.  Other ways to reduce air pollutants include driving less, taking transit or cycling.  Together, we can create a cleaner, more beautiful Cuyahoga!
