CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Today, the Cuyahoga County Central Services Campus Project Team announced next steps for the Central Services project during County Council’s Public Safety and Justice Affairs committee meeting. Cuyahoga County is in the process of building a modern facility that will replace the existing Corrections Center and provide a safe environment for those in our custody with improved operational efficiencies. The project is expected to break ground later this year.

“Cuyahoga County is committed to building a Central Services Campus that is more than just a jail. We have made unprecedented progress over the last 12 months towards our commitment to build a facility that will ensure our residents are in a better state when they leave than when they came in,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “The new Central Services Campus is an investment in our people and our community.”

The Project Team remains committed to developing a high-quality facility that meets the needs of both residents and staff, while continuing the County’s commitment to being good stewards of public dollars. The current program budget is $889M. The County team has successfully driven down the costs by optimizing space through the reduction of square footage, reducing the total number of beds, and using existing buildings to minimize unnecessary construction costs, without compromising the quality and environment of the facility or limiting planned programming.

“Ensuring that a project of this scale moves forward requires an incredible amount of preparation and planning, and we owe it to the community to ensure that every tax dollar is spent wisely,” said Debbie Berry, the County’s Chief of Integrated Development. “We are building the Central Services Campus to be a state-of-the-art facility, delivering the highest standards of service.”

The new facility will include enhanced medical, substance abuse, and mental health services, including a Behavioral Care Center that will provide trauma informed care in a secure facility as an alternative to jail. The campus will also include an on-site Reentry Resource Center to connect residents with basic needs such as transportation and housing, employment, and other supportive services. Each housing unit will include recreation areas, providing opportunities for exercise, fresh air and light for residents, along with room for programming, in-person and video visitation and medical services.

The County Team has reduced the number of beds in the facility to 1,886, a number that still meets operational needs, to continue the administration’s efforts to reduce the jail population. The new facility will also include an enhanced Central Booking Unit to improve processing and arraignment, along with an area for providing health assessments of those in the county’s custody.
