County Extends Deadline for Accepting Uncharged Individuals, City of Cleveland Agrees to Update Booking Protocol
Centralized booking protocol benefits residents, ensures justice, fairness
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – After extensive discussions with the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County has agreed to extend the deadline to no longer accept uncharged individuals into the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center. This extension is due to the City of Cleveland’s commitment to revise its booking policies and procedures to conform with the new requirements.
“We appreciate the City’s willingness to take these positive steps forward to ensure consistency and fairness in the booking process,” said County Executive Chris Ronayne. “These changes will provide significant benefits for residents, law enforcement, and everyone that touches the justice system.”
On February 19, County officials sent a letter to the City calling for the Cleveland Division of Police to end the practice of routinely bringing uncharged individuals into the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center for booking and housing by March 21.
“I strongly support having people charged when brought into the jail or very quickly thereafter, and appreciate the City of Cleveland’s willingness to work with us to build a better process", said Cuyahoga County Council President Dale Miller.
The City of Cleveland has indicated it has plans to secure resources for the City Prosecutor’s Office to fully staff the centralized booking system in the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. The City is also reviewing procedures to streamline determination of charges. The County will not implement a change in the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department prisoner acceptance policy until at least April 26, while the City works to conform to the new requirements.
“I am pleased to hear that Cleveland is revising their policies,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley. “We look forward to working with them to implement these changes.”
Cuyahoga County will continue to work with the City of Cleveland to ensure the successful implementation of a consistent, streamlined process for booking and processing individuals within the Corrections Center.
