Step into History! Veterans Memorial Bridge Tours Return
Visitors will learn about the past, present, and future of the lower level of the bridge
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Get ready to step into Cleveland's past this summer. Cuyahoga County will open the historic Veterans Memorial Bridge to the public on Saturday, June 21 from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The self-guided tour, part of Cleveland History Days, allows visitors to walk past century-old rail lines, explore unique urban architecture, and take in unmatched views of downtown Cleveland, the Cuyahoga River, and Lake Erie.
"The Veterans Memorial Bridge is one of Cuyahoga County's most remarkable historical structures, and we're excited to share it with the community," said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. "From the streetcars to the future of mobility, the bridge tour will allow residents and visitors to explore our transportation history and honor the work of those who came before us. We also hope this event inspires conversations about how we connect communities moving forward."
The Veterans Memorial Bridge is also a destination for the popular Take a Hike Tour hosted by the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation. Every Friday at noon, beginning June 6 through September 26, knowledgeable tour guides will take hikers along the streetcar level from West 9th to West 25th Streets. Participants will learn about the history of the bridge and its surroundings, and special visitors will tell stories of the city's past. Take a Hike Tour registration opens on Thursday, May 1 at takeahikecle.com.
"The Veterans Memorial Bridge is a vital link between our past and future. These tours offer a rare opportunity to experience the history and potential of this iconic structure up close. As we plan for a more connected, accessible future in Cuyahoga County, public engagement like this is essential to shaping what comes next," said Annie Pease, Senior Advisor for Transportation at Cuyahoga County.
"We encourage everyone to come out and see the space for themselves."
Visitors must sign a waiver to walk through the bridge's lower level. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. The waivers will be made available online in advance of the events.
