Grant funding will support safer streets, improved access to biking and walking paths

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Cuyahoga County has been awarded $2M in grant funding from the State of Ohio to improve safety for bicycle and pedestrian traffic through the State’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). Funds will go toward the development of a pedestrian/bike greenway along 1.3 miles of Clifton Road between Lakewood and Rocky River and major improvements to U.S. Bike Route 30/230 along Lake Erie. In addition, the City of Lakewood was awarded nearly $3M to enhance portions of Bunts Road through resurfacing and the addition of sidewalks, walking paths, and bike lanes.

“We are grateful for the State’s partnership in our efforts to expand mobility options in Cuyahoga County,” said Executive Chris Ronayne. “This active transportation investment will not only better connect the County through multiple modes of transportation, it will also bring health and economic benefits to residents of our communities.”

The Lake – Clifton Connector project will include the reconfiguration and reduction of vehicle lanes along Lake Avenue in Rocky River and Clifton Boulevard in Lakewood. The redesign will allow for construction of an 11-foot-wide multi-use path along the north side of the roadway, stretching from Linda Street east to Webb Road. The project will also feature a variety of pedestrian-friendly traffic calming amenities including a roundabout at the Lake-Clifton intersection, colored concrete crossings, enhanced lighting, and the installation of new signage.

The TAP Program provides funding for projects defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving access to public transportation, and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, recreational trails, and Safe Routes to School projects.

The Lake – Clifton Connector project total cost is estimated at $10.8M. Additional funding sources include the City of Lakewood, the City of Rocky River, and funding through NOACA’s Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative grant.
