CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH - Cuyahoga County has been awarded funding by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to help residents of the Corrections Center who suffer from mental health and substance abuse disorders. An allocation from the Opioid Remediation Grant will be used to develop and implement a Peer Navigator and Support program to provide both in-custody and post release services to residents of the Corrections Center. To initiate this process, the County has released a Request for Proposals (RFP), asking local partners and service agencies to submit ideas to offer strategic support and connection to resources. “Cuyahoga County is committed to investing in the health and wellness of every individual who spends time in our care, and that means providing critical on-site support and treatment for those with substance abuse and behavioral health challenges,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “By implementing a Peer Navigator and Support program, we hope to create a more supportive environment that promotes recovery.” “Through the Peer Navigator and Support Program, we will be better equipped to reach residents where they are by providing one-on-one guidance and support from individuals with lived experience,” said Laurel Diaz, Cuyahoga County’s Justice and Health Equity Officer. “This individualized approach promotes trust within the justice system, while reducing the stigma around mental health and substance abuse disorders.” Mental health issues and substance abuse disorders have a significant impact on the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, affecting both residents and daily operations. Data shows that these challenges impact about 70% of the center’s daily population, leading to various health and safety challenges for residents and staff. By providing access to peer navigator support, the Corrections Center will be able to offer critical guidance, reduce crises, and create a safer, more stable environment for those who reside, visit, or work within the facility. “A top priority of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department is the wellness of the residents and staff within the Corrections Center, and we know that by implementing programming that supports that mission, we are improving lives and fostering a safer, healthier environment,” said Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold A. Pretel. “The Peer Navigator Support program will be a welcome addition to current programming, offering unique, personalized support and treatment for residents.” The selected service provider will engage three full-time peer navigators/supporters to work with the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center’s eligible residents. Peer navigators will initiate engagement while their clients are in-custody and continue the support post-release for a limited time. The program will operate in partnership with the Corrections Center’s medical provider, MetroHealth. Proposals are due by 4:30 p.m. on August 8, 2525.
