CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH— In a moving celebration of purpose, resilience, and community healing, internationally-renowned artist and justice advocate Halim A. Flowers visited Cleveland this week to share his story and donate a powerful piece of art to the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (LMM) Men’s Shelter at 2100 Lakeside, the largest homeless shelter in Ohio.

The event, hosted by District 10 Councilman Michael J. Houser and LMM, brought together local leaders, shelter residents, artists, and reform advocates for an event centered on transformation through art and lived experience. Once sentenced to life in prison at age 16, Flowers was released after 22 years and has since become a celebrated painter, author, and speaker using his platform to inspire and uplift.

As part of his visit, Flowers presented one of his original paintings to the shelter, titled “Strength to Love (Philos Anthropos)”, donating the piece as a symbol of redemption, hope, and the human capacity for change.

“I created this work as a reflection of everything I’ve lived through,” said Flowers. “To have it hang in a space where men are working to rebuild their lives means everything. Art can be a mirror—and a map—to freedom.”

Councilman Houser called the donation “a reminder that healing doesn’t just happen through services and systems—it happens through connection, culture, and dignity. Halim’s gift will live on as an inspiration to every man who walks through those doors.”

“We are grateful to Halim A. Flowers for sharing this powerful painting with the men’s shelter,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “This artwork serves as a gift of hope and dignity, helping to create a sense of home at the shelter. It reflects Cuyahoga County’s commitment to supporting our unhoused residents, reminding the men here that they are seen, valued, and never alone in their journey toward stability.”

The artwork will be permanently displayed in a common area at the shelter, offering daily encouragement to residents navigating reentry, recovery, and renewal.

“We are so grateful to Halim for sharing his incredible talents with our residents and staff partners,” said Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry President & CEO Maria Foschia. “His thoughtful and powerful gift will serve as a daily inspiration to everyone.”
