Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office Issues New Ruling in Danny Mitchell Case from 1980

Posted on

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson today announced a ruling change to homicide in the 1980 case of Danny Mitchell. Mitchell, 20, was found in Cleveland, OH, on May 17, 1980. The case was originally ruled “undetermined” by Dr. Samuel Gerber due to advanced mumification and partial skeletonization. The cause and manner of death have been changed to “homicide” by unspecified means.

“This is a significant step in our investigation into the death of Danny Mitchell. Having an identification helped our review of Danny’s death. The sum of the investigation points to foul play,” said Dr. Gilson. “While we cannot say with certainty what type of violence caused this death, the circumstances are indicative of homicide. By working with our partners, our next step will hopefully involve bringing the person or persons responsible for Danny Mitchell’s death to justice.”

Investigation Timeline:
  • April 2, 1980: Danny Lee Mitchell is reported missing by his family in Cleveland, OH.
  • May 17, 1980:
  • Unidentified Human Remains (John Doe of 1980) found at 2041 East 65th Street in Cleveland, OH. The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office ruled the case "undetermined" due to advanced mumification and partial skeletonization.
  • November 27, 2017: The family of Danny Mitchell sees a Twinsburg Police press conference that uses facial reconstruction of a John Doe. Family reports Danny Mitchell to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) as a possible candidate.
  • December 8, 2017: Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office (CCMEO) launches an internal initiative to research old cases and enter them into NamUs. CCMEO enters an unidentified persons case (John Doe of 1980) case into NamUs (UP76266).NamUs provides a comparison of the BCI missing persons case and the CCMEO unidentified persons case. The information between the two cases appears to be a possible match.
  • December 18, 2020: CCMEO retrieves potential DNA sample from their evidence archives. CCMEO submits evidence to BCI for testing.
  • April 26, 2022: BCI reaches out to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) for assistance identifying John Doe of 1980.
  • February 2, 2023: NCMEC sends BCI three Family Tree DNA kits so Danny’s siblings can be on file for comparison to the John Doe of 1980.
  • February 21, 2023: NCMEC collaborates with BCI to submit the samples to Intermountain Forensics & Astrea Forensics for advanced DNA testing. The testing was funded by the Cold Case Initiative.
  • October 1, 2023: Initial DNA testing did not yield a full profile; however, Astrea confirmed a maternal relationship between John Doe and Danny’s siblings. This confirmed a relationship, but not enough to confirm a positive identification. Additional testing was needed.
  • June 6, 2024: NCMEC’s analytical team runs proof of life for Danny, and nothing is discovered. NCMEC collaborates with BCI and CCMEO to plot the cemetery where John Doe is buried using historical records, in an attempt to identify the correct location so another exhumation could be attempted.
  • October 1, 2024: NCMEC is awarded funds through the Children’s Justice Project to support unidentified person case work.
  • October 22, 2024: NCMEC works with BCI to facilitate and fund a second round of DNA testing at Astrea Forensics. Investigative Genetic Genealogy testing is a technique that combines traditional genealogy research with DNA analysis to help law enforcement solve crimes, identify unidentified human remains, and potentially identify perpetrators. This is the same technique used to capture the Golden State Killer.
  • February 21, 2025: Astrea Forensics successfully develops a suitable DNA profile from sample.
  • February 25, 2025: NCMEC and BCI collaborate with genealogists at Innovative Forensic Investigations who upload the DNA profile into GEDmatch Pro. Once in GEDmatch, the genealogists are able to complete a direct comparison to Danny’s siblings. Their assessment confirmed a positive sibling relationship.
  • April 23, 2025: BCI and CCMEO announce the positive identification of Danny Lee Mitchell, and CCMEO begins a case review.
  • December 16, 2025: After reviewing the case in totality, the ruling is changed to “homicide” by unspecified means
