Common Questions About Cleaning and Disinfecting During COVID-19

Information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institute of Health (NIH)

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces is a best practice recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses.

Many people have purchased common household cleaning supplies, but questions still remain. Explore our FAQ below to learn about how you can keep your household clean and safe.

What should I be cleaning?

The CDC recommends routine cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces. These include tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, remotes, cell phones, hard-backed chairs, desks, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Additionally, as many Americans are asked to study and work from home, frequently touched surfaces also include laptops, keyboards and computer mice.

How often should I be cleaning?

Current evidence suggests that coronavirus may remain viable on surfaces for hours to days. A study conducted by researchers from the CDC and National Institute of Health (NIH) observed that the virus could live for:

  • Up to four hours on copper.

  • Up to 24 hours on cardboard.

  • Up to 48-72 hours on plastic and stainless steel.

Based on this study, a safe recommendation would be to wash your hands upon returning home, then wiping your doors and locks. Much like with other respiratory illnesses, routine cleaning of common surfaces in your home can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

How can I best clean these surfaces?

CDC guidelines call for cleaning with soap or detergent and water, followed by a disinfectant. It is important to read all labels before using disinfectants and other cleaning chemicals on a surface. Never mix chemicals without reading the labels.

What about my laundry?

There are no general recommendations on frequency of cleaning; the CDC suggests using the warmest setting allowed for your items.

What if someone in my house is suspected/confirmed to have COVID-19?
