Cuyahoga County Executive Nominates Sheriff and Inspector General for Reappointment

The leadership roles are critical to the County’s mission to promote public trust and safety

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne announced the nomination for reappointment of two key leadership positions: Harold Pretel as Cuyahoga County Sheriff and Alexa Beeler as Inspector General. The reappointments are pending Cuyahoga County Council approval.

Sheriff Pretel has enacted positive change at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center and the community since taking the oath of office on July 18, 2023. Some of his accomplishments include implementing the Correctional Canine Screening Program for narcotics, successful security planning for major area events, and the introduction of Sheriff’s Update Briefings with team members across the department to improve communication and operations.

Sheriff Pretel has 30 years of law enforcement experience. Before leading the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, he served the City of Cleveland Division of Police as Deputy Chief of Homeland Special Operations, where he led the Bureaus of Special Investigations, Special Services, and Homeland Services. Sheriff Pretel has also served as the Commander of the Bureau of Homeland Services, led the Office of Professional Standards, and served in other key roles.

“Sheriff Pretel’s commitment to law enforcement reform and community engagement has led to significant improvements in safety, security, and community trust,” adds Executive Ronayne.

Under her leadership, the Agency of Inspector General has worked diligently to investigate fraud, waste, and abuse allegations while promoting transparency and ethical standards throughout the County government.

“Alexa has promoted a strong culture of responsible governance. We are confident these high standards will continue to be a trademark of her leadership,” remarks Executive Ronayne.
