Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department Names New Chief Deputy of Corrections
Major Nestor Rivera took the Oath of Office on January 30
CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH – Today, Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel administered the Oath of Office to Major Nestor Rivera as the Sheriff’s Department’s new Chief Deputy of Corrections. Chief Deputy Nestor Rivera, a career veteran of the department, brings a wealth of law enforcement and corrections experience to the Corrections Center, and has served as interim Chief since June of 2024.
“I want to congratulate Chief Deputy Nestor Rivera on this well-deserved promotion,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “Chief Deputy Rivera knows the Sheriff’s Department inside and out and has done an exceptional job in not only leading the Corrections Center, but also in supporting staff and instilling the values and fostering the culture the facility needs to succeed.”
Rivera began his law enforcement career in 1995 with the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a deputy and later a jailer. Rivera was hired by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department in 1999, serving in the Narcotics and Canine Units, and as a Task Force Officer with the Caribbean Gang Task Force, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, targeting high intensity drug trafficking areas within Ohio. Rivera is a 2018 graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department maintains high levels of training and certification for Corrections Center Staff. In accordance with departmental training regulations, Chief Nestor Rivera recently completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Jail Administrator course. Chief Deputy Nestor Rivera will continue the duties of Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy of Corrections effective immediately.
